Event title: The History of Oxford Street
Where: Mitchell Theatre - Sydney
Category: Talkabout

Event description

Rainbow FlagOxford Street is one of Sydney’s best known streets, largely because of the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, watched by tens of thousands and seen by millions around the world on TV and internet. It has had a long and colourful history, starting out as a strategic road for the convict settlement, and experiencing ups and downs over the centuries.

Garry Wotherspoon is an historian whose books include Sydney’s Transport: Studies in Urban History, and ‘City of the Plain’, a history of Sydney’s gay subcultures. He was awarded the Centenary of Federation Medal for his work as an academic, researcher and human rights activist. He currently works as an editorial consultant on the Dictionary of Sydney Project and is a Director on the Board of the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts.
