James Meehan was transported from Ireland in 1799 and by 1803 he was a member of the first party to explore Port Phillip, later that year he became the first surveyor in Tasmania. Meehan's celebrated 1807 plan of Sydney Town remained a template for many years and his discovery of the Goulburn Plains in 1818 led to the opening of vast new tracts of grazing country. Tony Dawson is a former Associate Dean of Science at the University of Technology in Sydney, is a member of the Manly Warringah and Pittwater Historical Society and has a particular interest in surveying history.
