Turning the Tide

Some scientists estimate that nearly all current fisheries could disappear in our lifetimes due to overfishing and destructive fishing methods. Global fishing catches have been in decline and many stocks have collapsed completely. There are estimates that 90 per cent of all big fish in the ocean have vanished, and the future of the hundreds of millions of people who depend on fish for their protein is in the balance.

According to the Australian Marine Conservation Society, in 2005 the global fishing fleet was 2.5 times larger than what our oceans could sustainably produce. Join us for a discussion on turning the tide on overfishing and how to make sustainable seafood choices.

Conversations are your chance to chat with speakers about topics on a wide range of subjects, from ethical voting to passionate shopping, affordable housing to corporate volunteering.

In 2008 Conversations series will be based on a monthly topic, giving you the opportunity to explore different aspects of each theme throughout the course of the month. Attend one in a series or all four. Click here to see our monthly themes for 2008.

Everyone is welcome, for CBD workers the lunchtime timeslot provides a unique opportunity to feed the mind as well as the body. 

The Mitchell Theatre is located on Level 1, 280 Pitt Street.

The hire fee includes a fixed data projector, projection
screen, sound system, lectern and a computer with internet
access. Instructions for use of the room equipment are displayed on the wall and are also available at Level 3 Reception.

Food and beverages MUST NOT be consumed in the Mitchell Theatre, however the foyer may be used as a break-out area.
