175 years old - and the Governor of NSW becomes Patron of the SMSA
On 22 March 2008 the SMSA turned 175 years old.  This makes it one of the oldest institutions in Australia.  To celebrate this extraordinary event members and guests gathered at Government House on Wednesday 26 March where the SMSA was honoured by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO when she became the Patron of the SMSA in her role as Governor of New South Wales.

Founded in 1833 as the School of Arts for the Mechanics of Sydney, the SMSA is the oldest Mechanics Institute/School of Arts in Australia. It is a vibrant community of people making a vital contribution to the social, artistic and cultural life of Sydney.
